Sweet - my dad got himself a *very* snazzy digital SLR a while back, think he was looking at some Canons too but went for a Nikon in the end, I think because of lens issues. That said, his one was a bit over the 4-figure mark as far as I know...
Let me know if you want any specific feedback about his one (for comparison purposes or whatnot) - and it's quite possible that if you want he may well be able to you a discount of some sort too, if you're buying it in an actual Irish-based "shop"...
I think you're right to buy into the Canon system, especially if you plan to buy either quite short or very long lenses (i.e. with standard lenses it's a wash). Canon's prosumer digital cameras currently use APX size sensors but their professional range use 35x25 sensors (i.e. the same size as a 35mm film frame). Hence in a few years even the prosumer models will have full-frame sensors. That will make wide-angle lenses real wide-angle lenses. With the Nikon cameras even the pro models use APX sensors and so a 17mm lens looks like a 35. Nikon have announced that they have no plans for a 35mm sensor in any part of their range (though Kodak make a body with a 35mm sensor and Nikon-fit lenses).
The picture is different for longer lenses; there the advantage for the Canon system is that many more of the lenses feature IS and IS is generally cheaper in the Canon range than in the Nikon range I think (Canon probably have a patent). As far as I can see the only area where Nikon have a clear lead is in the flash system. But Canon strobes are pretty good too.
Disclaimer: I bought the Nikon D70s, so maybe I'm thinking the grass is greener.
get it,i know a few people who,ve bought em,and they are amazing, real workhorses, also like pentax, anything by canon will last you a lifetime an or have a very high trade in value.
forget to mention,i can get you a discount if you go to gunns of wexford stret,i do 99percent of my photo buying thtere so i can put in a good word for you.
I used to have a Pentax P30T. Good camera if you don't need autofocus. However, its trade-in value was 50% of fuck all. Now, if I'd had the SMC Pentax 60mm lens, which was absolutely wonderful, I might not have sold the camera.
oooh you will make K muchly jealous!!

Probably gonna get mine through Expansys.ie where it's €1,248.51. got his Powershot S80 from there & had not bother.
ReplyDeleteWill stick with standard 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens for a while then get a fast low light lens.
