Piercing
After how ever many years I've had my piercing, I've decided to take them out because they've periodically got infected & never healed properly.
lady_bastet got hers done at the same time & hers healed. I never poked at them & took care of them as best I could but that's life I suppose.
Edit: Might leave them for a while, doing ok tonight. Think the water in Finglas makes them funny.

Xmas
Christmas was quiet this year. lady_bastet stayed over with her family & I stayed over with mine so we had to wait to open each others presents.
My brother got me the Wireless Headset for the Xbox 360 (tested it out & no connectivity issues) & lady_bastet got me the Live Vision Camera with a 12 month Xbox Live & extra stuff. She also got me some books & DVDs so I was very happy :)
In other news, new PC is all set up & working perfectly. Thinking of getting another internal 250GB HD in the new year as they're quite cheap now.

Sorry, lads & ladies.
Don't know why the photo stream is spitting out the old photos, all I did was log in to my Flickr account.

Sad News
When I came down stairs this morning, one of the budgies was standing on the bottom of the cage moving very little. He stumbled about a bit, turned then fell on his side & died.
Poor little guy.

PC
The fan is dying on my graphics card (nVidia GeForce 4800 AGP) so I'm thinking it might be time for a PC upgrade.
My current setup is about 4 years old now, Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard & AMD Athlon XP 2600 processor.
I would prefer an Asus motherboard which will entail a new processor & would also prefer an nVidia graphics card.
Any recommendations?

Rather You Than Me
Part of our trip to Whitby included some time in Alton Towers.
I went on a few timid rides but lady_bastet & pearcider went on Air.
Here is evidence of their insanity?!?!

Back
Got back from our travels yesterday but too tired to post.
Got lots of washing & sorting to do.
Numerous photos taken but bulk are of XPQ-21 (missed some other bands entirely) which I must stop doing.
Better update tomorrow (in work :P)

Cult Photos
Sorry kids, best of a bad bunch unfortunately. Had hopes they'd turn out better what with being able to prop the camera on the balcony but with such intermittent light you need a lens & they weren't having any of that (asked to see my camera at one point).

The Cult
The Cult gig was excellent on Friday. Completely missed the fact that I had a balcony seat until I got there & was sent upstairs. On the plus side I got right up the front & had a commanding view of the show. Even so, the photos I took were mediocre due to the added distance.
They played all their best known songs but nothing new even though they're supposed to be working on a new album. All good though.
Next up Lacuna Coil (standing this time :P)

My Potionmaster Jacket arrived from Kambriel & it is truly opulent. I may save wearing it until Whitby.
In geeky news, I've been playing around with Microsoft Virtual PC again & installed Ubuntu on a virtual machine. It's pretty good but myself & pearcider agree things can get tricky when you need to install new stuff on Linux.

Tassel Club
Another fantastic Tassel Club last night in the Spiegeltent. Myself, lady_bastet, pearcider, ickle_tayto, blackberry_roan with her new beau, Arthur & Catherine made it in early enough to get booths which, while it gave you space, put us a bit away from the stage. As a result, I don't have any decent photos of the show :( I did take a few photos of the gang which I will get to work on.
The show was hosted by Dusty Limits, who had some new tongue (or something similar) in cheek songs (his Phantom of the Opera piece was hilarious) & harassed the audience periodically. Acts wise, we had Heidi Hoopla doing nifty tricks with hoola hoops, The Extraordinares, a 3 piece harmony soul group with band, Miss Cherri Shakewell doing a fan dance, KXB with his big balls (love that piece) & Miss Lily White avec la balloons.
The show seemed to fly by though which was a shame. I suppose it's like all things when they're more familiar. The first Tassel Club in the Spiegeltent seemed to go on for ages.
Got to chat with some of ickle_tayto's friends who I've met a few times before but never kept in contact with, so I'm going to do my best to mingle & contact people from now on.
Long live the Tassel Club!

Things
Gave the room a bit of a clean with lady_bastet. More stuff for Finglas (kind of our storage facility at this stage), moved the bed around & threw out some old clothes. Don't worry, no good Goth stuff.
Gonna get my ass in gear with a few things as I've grown a bit complacent (no not emo) of late.
Happy with book reading progress though.

End of the week & only getting around to posting about my visit to my sister in Cambridge. They moved in only a few months ago so it was good to see the new place. TTFN
In the airport, about to head off to see my sister in the UK.
My books arrived from Amazon & one is very big. Lots of words for little old me. If anyone likes Victorian literature, let me know, can show you the books sometime.
Anyway we've a long wait as we're here way early but better safe than sorry.
Have fun this weekend.

Work
I don't mention work much. Kind of just get on with things but I've found myself getting a little bit panicked of late trying to meet deadlines.
As I'm still learning the complexities of our software, I still have to ask people for help. Quite a bit actually. It's left me wondering if I should have picked things up better by now or am I actually cut out for straight up programming. I enjoyed the database design & admin stuff when I was doing that. That being said, it was much easier.
Maybe I'm just shying from the challenge. My team leader is a sociable but focused bloke & has said on numerous occasions that I'm doing well.
Patience I suppose...

Dominion
Getting out to Dominion was good fun this weekend too. Haven't gone in ages so it seemed extra special. Pretty much everyone was there with _velvetdarkness as guest DJ. Good job Will.
Have to remember to burn Siouxsie's Downside Up b-sides & bonus stuff for Paul Fitz & XPQ-21 for Arthur.
Apart from that, did a few shots of Jager with ferrousoxide seeing as she's heading off. Great seeing you again. Hugs.
Will try to get out to Dominon a bit more in the future but what with saving...
Will try though.

A Scanner Darkly
With the return of Mr. pearcider, we decided to make something of our usually nothing-filled Sunday & go to the movies. What to see was the question? A quick check of entertainment.ie, pointed us in the direction of A Scanner Darkly. I had heard of it a bit before as it is a trailer on the Xbox Live Marketplace but I hadn't watched it.
The review mentioned that it was by Philip K. Dick who, even though I don't read, I knew was a popular author of science fiction. It had Keanu "Whoa!" Reeves & numerous off center actors in the cast (IMDB). The review did mention something about an interesting animation style being used but we thought it would only be periodic. In actual fact, the entire movie is done with this quirky, layered, paint effect animation. It's pretty good particularly in portraying the drug induced hallucinations.
Not going to go into the plot at all, I just recommend people go see it as it is well worth it.
Seeing it kind of inspired an idea for a movie night with the likes of Clockwork Orange, Memento, Fight Club, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, etc. Basically a night of head melting.

More Games
Got some more games for the Xbox (with backwards compatibility in mind) including BLACK, Fable & Far Cry Instincts. Far Cry is the only one not BC at the moment but hopefully it should be on the cards.
Also got Kameo for the Xbox 360. Might see if I can get lady_bastet involved as there's a good co-op mode involved.

Quick Updates
Quiet weekend in Wexford. Cleaned up & fed the chickens. The chickens are funny.
Taking care of pearcider's housemate's hamster, Fudge. He's a cute little guy.
Was over at tabilities place this evening sorting out the last few things on his PC. Put Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office Viewers, QuickTime, Windows Defender etc. on the PC to cover the last few bits & pieces.
Nearly time for sleep me thinks

Webcam
Got my new webcam yesterday & tried it out once I got home. It's physically smaller than I expected but still well built. I've set it up on to of my flat panel monitor for better positioning, rather than on the desk.
It has some gimmicky features such as still/animated video overlays but more importantly it has plentiful controls to adjust settings, good zoom control & a facial tracking system which I still have to work out.
The software allows you to capture photos & instantly post them to Windows Live Spaces which is great as WLS has just re-launched with numerous updates including the Friends module.
Have already tested it out on Windows Live Messenger with a friend & once we got some mike issues sorted, it was great.

Xbox 360 Connectivity
Was fiddling around with the devices that I can connect to the Xbox 360.
I thought my camera, the Canon Powershot S70, would not work through USB as this page had the S40 & S50 listed as unsupported. But it did show up in the Media blade & was even named "Powershot S70". Even connected to the PC, it could be seen on the Media Center Extender.
Unfortunately, lady_bastet's digital camera, a Fuji FinePix F445, did not show up on either even though it was a mass storage device which I thought would definitely work.
Lastly, my Zen shows up on the Xbox 360 Media blade but haven't tested it on PC through Media Center Extender.

Continued Geekiness
Did some overhauling on the network last night. Decided I wanted to go back to wireless where possible.
Started off by upgrading the router's firmware. The firmware only resolves some existing issues, no new features but best to keep things up to date.
I decided to follow some security advisories which I've read before. First I used a random SSID for the router name. This increases anonymity to outside users. I used this WEP key generator to create the SSID, basically it just has to be random characters so I used the 64-bit key generator.
Next up, I reactivated WEP security. I had it turned off for a while because the MAC filtering locks things down tighter but I wanted a visible security on the router. I have to choose WEP because some simpler devices only support it. For this I used the above WEP generator for a 128-bit key.
After that, it was a matter of setting up my desktop, notebook & PDA to access the network (MAC addresses already configured in router) & you're done.

Virtual Fun
Showing my true geekiness, I've gone all retro with virtual PCs courtesy of Microsoft Virtual PC. No particular gain from a personal point of view, just a laugh.
I've set up virtual PCs for Windows Media Center Edition, Windows 98 SE & Windows 95 OSR2.
The trickiest one to get installed & updated was Windows 95.
First off I forgot the preparation involved for installation. I got a boot disk image from bootdisk.com which allowed me into DOS as the CD was not bootable. Then you have to prepare the partitions & format. Copied the WIN95 installation directory to the virtual hard drive as the CD support was lost after reboot. I realised this after a first run when it looks for files on the CD on initialisation.
The next problem was that Internet Explorer was so old (version 3.0), patches were tricky. IE 5.x is no longer available from Microsoft so I had to find it elsewhere on the net. Once that was upgraded, I could update a few bits on Windows Update.
Goes to show that the installation process has been simplified a lot over the years.

Surprised
Tested out a few things on the new Xbox 360.
First up was the USB keyboard support. I figured it would work with direct cabled USB keyboards but didn't think my wireless keyboard would work but it did. Not going to worry about it for the time being as I don't chat on Xbox Live yet & that's where it comes in handy but at least I know it works. Not sure if it's wireless drivers are installed on the Xbox 360 or what but hey it works. Must test it in the Media Center Extender for Messenger chat, etc.
On the downside, the Media Center Extender funcationality works great except for a few videos which won't play sound (video is fine). All my videos are raw DVD rips (no encoding) so all should be the same. If it comes down to the codec on the PC, well then it's odd because sound works on most videos. Just a little glitch to sort out on the forums

Just a little glitch to sort out on the forums

New Gadgetry
Bought an Xbox 360 on the weekend. I went for the premium version with the hard drive & wireless controller of course. It totally rocks. Xbox Live has great trailers, demos & other downloads. I have it hooked up to my Media Center PC so I can stream music, pictures & videos. It's also backwards compatible with over half my original Xbox games (more to come, I hope).
I'm holding off on the Canon EOS 30D for a few more months for financial & decisional reasons.
Last week I got a USB sync cable for my Axim because the docking cradle was too bulky to carry around. Bit of a mix up at first because I ordered the cable from the old model because I thought it would be compatible. Got a refund from Dell & ordered the correct one from Sales over the phone. Strange it's not listed on the site though.

Battle for Bunratty Castle
Here's my first batch of photos from Bunratty & our weekend trip...
Had to do so quick photo fixing on a lot of them to remove a thin barrier rope so that's what the weird blurring is on some of them.

Axim Update
Got a new ROM update (A12) for my Axim. Fixes a good few problems with the device/OS but people on the AximSite forums were having difficulties applying the update.
Had a few scary moments but I let the process follow through & it did update.
My biggest problem was with the disappearing memory cards (hack available) but I think the current ROM addressed that by changing the update schedule from X minutes to "as received" or something like that.

MirrorMask
Watched MirrorMask by Neil Gaiman & Dave McKean last night. Interesting movie reminiscent of Labyrinth/Never Ending Story/Dark Crystal, not just because of the Jim Henson involvement, but the overall plot & characters as well.
It really showcased McKean's artistic style with wide shots of scenes, often reducing the characters to dots.
Was good fun though with obligatory "turn evil" = "turn Goth" moment for lead character Helena :P

Moving stuff
We moved the Behemoth aka my desktop PC over to Sandyford. It was getting annoying not being able to use a powerful PC for games, etc.
We managed to juggle things around to fit things in but the cables are still a spaghetti explosion.

Went to see Xmen 3 on Friday with lady_bastet, pearcider & purple_beast. I enjoyed it. Love comic book movies.
Popped down to Blackrock on Saturday. Just pottered about then headed back to get ready for the evening.
For food, lady_bastet, pearcider & myself went to Aya. Had some lovely dim sum & a chicken & prawn yakisoba. Thankfully my head didn't swell up (slightly alergic to sea food).
Then we headed to The Dragon for cocktails with the gang to celebrate ickle_tayto's birthday. I stuck to JD & coke but the others sampled the various fruity cocktails.
We all headed on to Dominion which was the EBM/industrial/noise night. Don't think the style went down well. Think it pushed the sound system too much.
Finally went for a drive up to Powerscourt today with lady_bastet & ickle_tayto...

Phone Modem
Finally found out how to use my mobile as a modem. I thought it was pay monthly only but that doesn't seem to be the case.
2c per kilobyte so 1MB of data is about EUR2. I can turn off pictures on the Axim in IE so I can shave a bit off there.

PDA
Decided I should make better use of my PDA so I got some bits & pieces of software for it.
First off, I got Pocket Streets which is a good navigation utility & has a nice selection of maps for the UK, etc.
Next up was some Java support. IBM have a Java environment for Windows Mobile 2003 which I downloaded & installed. This will allow me to run Java games, etc. which are popular on the mobile phone platform.
Finally, I grabbed some trial games from http://www.astraware.com/ including Bejewelled 2, Sudoko & Zuma. Might buy 1 or 2 of these as they're really good.
Will have a go at syncing some music across from Windows Media Player this evening.

Unch! Unch! Bass Drum!!!
I've been without bass/a sub woofer on my PC in Finglas for some time since I went for the minimal approach of monitor mounted speakers.
Today I bodged together my old speaker system's sub woofer to my sound card. Even though I've a dedicated sub woofer output on my sound card, it didn't want to work. What I did get working was channeling the rear left & right outputs through the sub woofer. Works fine & cable clutter is still negligible.

[wearing a diguise] - "Excuse me. There has been a mistake."
Desmond Flapp - "Who are you?"
- "I am government man, come from the government, the government has sent me. Ho Ho Ho! This is not an alien life form! He is an experimental government aircraft."
Desmond Flapp - "That's an aircraft?"
- "Fools! What else would I be?"
Desmond Follower - "What about the floating pig out there?"
- "That's a government pig! Well, I have to take everything back to the home base now. Buh-bye."
